CINCINNATI, Ohio — Joe Burrow has garnered plenty of attention for his fashion style.

From the striped black and gray suit he wore to the Super Bowl, the rose-tinted, rectangular frames glasses he had on during a press conference or his custom SpongeBob SquarePants sneakers, he’s enjoyed playing the role of Bengals fashion icon.

So how excited is Burrow about the debut of the Bengals’ new all-white uniforms and the debut of their white-stripped helmets?

“I’d play in trash bags,” Burrow said smiling. “I really don’t care what we wear out there.”

He’s in the minority though as much of the Bengals locker room is eager to debut the new look that’s been in the planning phase going back to 2021. The team officially announced plans to debut the uniforms in Week 4 back in July.

“Y’all like that?” Bengals corner Mike Hilton said, pointing at the helmet hanging in his locker. “I think it’s smooth. They always going to be clean. The environment is going to be live on Thursday.”

The all-white look’s origins go back to the color rush uniforms the Bengals wore in 2016, uniforms that also debuted in a Thursday game against the Dolphins.

Those were introduced amid much fanfare during an event at the Cincinnati Zoo with Geno Atkins, Carlos Dunlap and Tyler Boyd modeling the uniforms for fans. The difference was that the NFL had a rule in place limiting teams to one helmet.

The NFL eased those rules for this season allowing teams to use an alternate helmet with certain uniform combinations.

“I think it’s pretty cool,” Bengals corner Chidobe Awuzie said. “This is my second year here, there’s been a lot of changes and I happened to experience a lot of the changes. I think that’s one of them, being able to wear these white helmets. I think the fans requested and wanted it, they were able to make it happen. I think it’s a great thing for the franchise and the organization.”

The Bengals broke in the helmets at practice last week, and the team is painting the field to match.

“My family is more excited than I am, they were FaceTiming me to see them,” Bengals safety Jessie Bates said.

It’s not just the helmets that have players excited about the White Out. They sense the greater interest from an engaged fan base that was rewarded with a trip to the Super Bowl last year and the players want to keep rewarding building on that excitement.

“It’s juiced up in Cincinnati,” Bates said. “This makes it feel like a playoff atmosphere.”
