For most of us, buying a sports bra is a treat. If you have ever worked out wearing a bra that doesn’t fit, then you know that this discomfort can deprive you of your life more quickly than using an iPhone battery. Whether it is compression or underwire, nothing can consume our motivation to exercise more than the pain of an unsupportive or restrictive sports bra. But for many young women, sports bras are not only an opportunity to inject fashion into your sports wardrobe, but also a barrier to complete entry. Due to limited time, money, or freedom to buy such clothing, these women are forbidden to do their favorite things.

It makes the sports bra project an incredible business. The project was created by Sarah Dwyer-Shick, a New Yorker, to address this obstacle to sports participation. The Sports Bra Project was established in 2018. It is a non-profit organization that distributes sports bras to women and girls who cannot get sports bras to eliminate barriers to participation. As ABC reported, the project has distributed approximately 7,000 brand new sports bras to women and girls in 30 different countries.

For Dwyer-Shick, it all started with her journey through Namibia with a non-profit organization. They sent a container with footballs, boots and textbooks, but she suddenly thought that she should also pack some sports bras. She eventually packaged 30 to 40 and didn't really expect them to be useful. "We work with a wonderful lady in the Namibian Football Association, and we are in the capital Windhoek. Some of her projects are very far away in some rural areas. I think she will take them to those shows," Dwyer-Shee Ke explained to ABC. Instead, she asked if she could give them to her national team players.

A similar experience in Brazil also shows the threshold for women to participate in sports. "The problems they deal with culturally, and Brazilian manufactured goods [such as sports bras] are expensive. I thought,'Well, you deal with so much, can we solve this small part? This is just the beginning."

Although the number of women and girls participating in sports in the countries/regions participating in the sports bra project has increased significantly since then, Australia has not been included. But due to the cooperation between the two, this situation will change in 2022. Next year, Women Sport Australia will cooperate with the Sports Bra Project and become an active participant to help more women in their hometown provide this kind of clothing, hoping that they can continue to participate in their favorite sports.

"Sports bras are an important element to ensure that female athletes feel comfortable when participating in sports and entertainment," said Gen Simmons, President of Women's Sports Australia. "We look forward to seeing bras being donated to the Australian communities that need them," Simmons added.

Since the implementation of the project, Dwyer-Shick has seen how important the most basic elements are in increasing the participation rate of women in sports. Bras are mainly from groups and individuals engaged in sports bra sports, allowing young women to assume leadership roles without too much pressure. When someone donates a bra, they also have the opportunity to write a personalized support message to the recipient, adding a personal note to the experience of building a community around the world.
