The Lumberjacks men’s soccer team finally broke through with a conference win on Thursday, as they beat Stanislaus State at home in a 3-0 victory to open the homecoming festivities for Cal Poly Humboldt. After being consistently competitive and a weekend of strong showings against top-ranked competition, the ‘Jacks put up a dominant performance (and maybe let out a bit of a frustration) against the Warriors.

The Lumberjacks got off to a quick start on goal in the 6th minute by senior Juan Perez. Humboldt carried that 1-0 lead into the halfway point, but bolted further out in front on a goal in the 63rd minute by sophomore Nico Herrera-Land. A late goal in the 81st minute by senior Edgar Gonzalez put the finishing touch on the decisive victory for the Lumberjacks. The conference win gave Humboldt a bump in the league standings and a win on Sunday against Cal State East Bay would put the ‘Jacks right in the middle of the standings as they battle to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association title.

On the women’s side, the Lumberjacks battled to a 1-1 draw against the Warriors in the afternoon game on Thursday. Humboldt remains undefeated at home this year with the draw, but was certainly looking for a key win at home that would have lifted them up the conference standings. Sophomore Erin Mohr had the lone goal for the ‘Jacks as she got them off to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. But the Warriors got the equalizer in the 63rd minute and were able to hold on for a draw.

The Lumberjacks will now travel to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay in their game on Sunday. Although the ‘Jacks are winless on the road so far this season, they’ll have a great chance to secure their first road win against a struggling East Bay team that has lost four of their last five and is still looking for their first conference win.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women’s volleyball fell in three sets to Sonoma State on Thursday night. The ‘Jacks volleyball team was coming off their first conference win coming into the game, but faced one of the stronger teams in the conference in Sonoma State. Although the Seawolves have fallen to a few conference foes in the competitive CCAA, they were 12-1 out of conference and also posted an 8-1 record at home.

The Lumberjacks will have the chance to bounce back as they cap off the Lumberjack homecoming festivities on Saturday night. Although the Seawolves are still gonna pose a tough challenge, hopefully the ‘Jacks will match better in the rematch game at home. The game will start at 5 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena to wrap up a day of music and other fun events on campus.
