You can win the game

Cincinnati-Christian Pulisic heard these comments. Tim Weah and Gregg Berhalter also have. Earlier this week, Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa opened his mouth. What was said was not particularly inflammatory. But many people in the U.S. men’s national team interpreted them as disrespectful.

"Mexico has always been a mirror for [the United States] to want to see itself," Ochoa said. "They want to copy things."

So on Thursday, about 24 hours before the war between the United States and Mexico, Pulisic had an idea. A cheeky thought. "An idea came to my mind," he said with a smile.

At some point during these 24 hours, someone in the American camp started to work and put a mark on the undershirt.

"The person in the mirror," they scribbled.

They handed the latest sh*thousery weapon to Pulisic in a competitive competition.

On Friday night, Pulisic scored here to beat Mexico with a header. When he ran towards the camera, as the beer soared and thousands of American fans cheered, Pulisic put two fingers on his ears. Then he tugged at his jersey. He showed his undershirt. Then, without a word, he fought back.

After the game, Pulisic tried to downplay the jersey. "I [not] trying to cause controversy," he said softly.

However, Weah won't let him back down.

"It's just a message, you know?" Weah said, saying that he provided an idea for the shirts of the USMNT jersey crew.

"I think this is a new era," Weah continued. "Before the game, Mexico said a lot of nonsense. Beating them will only shut them up."

This week, Ochoa's words have been spread in the US team. In some ways, they have been taken out of context. Ochoa not only talked about the men's national team, but also about the league and the football ecosystem. At least to some extent, he was right. For decades, the U.S. plan has lagged behind Mexico and caught up. Its top club still lags behind La Liga MX.

But this USMNT created its own background in the summer. First in Denver, then in Vegas. It braved beer cans and controversy to conquer Mexico in the National League final. Two months later, it reproduced this feat in the Gold Cup. The players feel that they have won the respect of Mexico. They feel that they have created a new era.

However, they, the victors, are said to still look in the mirror of Mexico?

"When you hear the news from their camp that we want to be them, we are looking at a mirror in Mexico, wanting to see ourselves or something like that-it shows that we still have a long way to go. Take the respect of Mexico," U.S. coach Berhalt said on Thursday. "I think the two victories in the summer didn't make much difference."

So they started to win it on the court again.

They also plan to have some taste of their own once they talk about it.

This is not an obvious taste. This is subtle. Even non-football staff are involved. They heard Ochoa's comments. They know the players have. A staff member had his own idea: Line up Michael Jackson's "Men in the Mirror" in a row, and if the United States wins, it will blast it all over the stadium.

Sure enough, shortly after the final whistle sounded, it became the soundtrack of the party.

The team’s social media staff cited Michael Jackson’s songs and participated in it.

According to officials from the American Football Association, the game operations department does not know that players such as Pulisic and Weah have also been planning. Almost no one knew Pulisic's jersey outside the locker room. For a few hours on Friday night, it was buried under multiple layers, covered by a heavy thermal jacket, protecting the torso of a man who had only played 23 minutes of competitive football in the past two months.

Pulisic, who has just recovered from injury, knows that he can only play another 23 minutes at most to affect this crucial game. He knew that the opportunity to bring his "ideas" to the world was fleeting.

But he took it. His plan fell onto his seat miraculously. There is nothing more to say.

"I think you know this information," he said when asked about the man in the mirror. "There is no need to say too much."

"I think we have won respect in the past few matches against them," he said of Mexico. "They know what we mean, and we know what they mean. This is a great competition."
