The songwriter was performing at DC's Something in the Water Festival on Saturday night the Beat Ya Feet dance, which has been a popular step in the nation's capital for more than two decades.

But after video of the dance break made its way to social media, Timberlake was lambasted by users for his poor performance, with one person joking that his dance was closer to the 'hokey pokey' than Beat Ya Feet.

One fan who had a prime spot at the DC festival shared a video of Justin's dancing to TikTok on Sunday, captioning it, 'CANT BELIEVE I SAW JT,' with a crying emoji.

'DC, get yo' beat!' Timberlake appears to shout in the clip as he proceeds to show off his footwork while his face looks far from relaxed.

Making amends: Justin apologised last month in an Insta Stories video for his subpar version of DC's Beat Ya Feet dance during a performance in Washington, DC

The dance is fairly brief and doesn't have the more extended movies that many Beat Ya Feet dancers display.

One person who caught the clip of Justin dancing thought it had a strong resemblance to a classic childhood dance.

'Justin Timberlake said "DC beat your feet" and proceeded to do the hokey pokey,' they joked.

Other mocking tweets brought up his relationship with Britney Spears and his infamous Super Bowl halftime performance with Janet Jackson, both of which have made him a renewed subject of ridicule in recent years.

Kayleigh Donaldson joked that the subpar moves could have belonged in a half-hearted Glee rendition.

'Justin Timberlake completing his evolution into Mr. Schuster [sic] from Glee,' she wrote.

The former NSYNC member also got compared to other maligned men, including Chet Hanks.

Failed execution: He was mercilessly ribbed on social media for his attempt at the Beat Ya Feet dance at the Something in the Water Festival in the US capital

'Justin Timberlake was just at Something In The Water dancing like Chet Hanks,' one user tweeted.

Another hilarious tweet compared him to an awkward 'vice principal.'

'Justin Timberlake looks like a Vice Principle trying to have a dance off in the hallway with his students talm'bout "what you know about this" #sitw [sic],' they wrote.

One person who watched the clip said that the Cry Me A River singer's dancing was 'a cross between a black uncle at a cookout and Irish river dancing,' adding, 'and no I won't be explaining this any further.'

Even the pop star's outfit got a drubbing, with a tweet reading, 'Did Justin Timberlake just get off work?? Cause the outfit is very much IT specialist.'

Justin was dressed for his performance in an unusually casual look featuring a short-sleeve button-up shirt with green triangles and checker patterns, along with khaki pants and chunky tan trainers with red and yellow accents.

He took the dance break during what appeared to be an interlude in a performance of his 2006 single SexyBack.

According to KQED, the Beat Ya Feet Dance originated with Marvin 'Slush' Taylor in DC around the late 1990s.

The dance reportedly evolved out of the city's go-go music, described as a 'mixture of relaxed funk, gospel, jazz, call and response, and Afro-Caribbean beats.'
