Only eight months after launching the breakthrough concept, we announced the commercial release of FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT. Transform our brand's cooperation concept shoes from the moon landing plan to the realization of mass-produced low-carbon performance footwear, and demonstrate the power of cooperation to other sportswear industries and other fields.

Released earlier this year (May 2021), the carbon dioxide emissions of each pair of FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is 2.94 kg, which represents the best performance of the two brands. This is because we are working together to make the carbon footprint as low as possible. High-performance running shoes.

Now, with the limited sale online and in-store this month, we are accelerating the key race for the carbon neutral future of sports and fashion and proving that low-carbon performance footwear can be expanded. A wider version with four new color schemes will be launched in the spring of 2022.

FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT shows how fast progress can be made by sharing innovation and collaborating with competitors-this example has the power to encourage others to rethink their business as usual.

"Our goal is to transform FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT from the concept of landing on the moon to something that triggers systemic change. We want to show how collaboration and open source thinking can have a halo effect across the industry and help achieve net zero.

Adidas has a tradition of working closely with partners to expand innovation. We see the possibility of cooperation and can bring manufacturing expertise. For example, in 2015, we cooperated with Parley to produce a concept shoe made of recycled marine plastic. By the end of 2020, 30 million pairs of these The shoes have been made. Now, our goal is to reduce the average carbon dioxide emissions of each product by 15% by 2025, and FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is an important step towards this goal, and it is also our journey to build low-carbon footwear on a large scale. Brian Grevy, member of the Executive Board of Adidas Global Brands.

In the 12-month innovation sprint, these two brands have achieved important learning results, which eventually led to the birth of this shoe. Teams that span product design, material innovation, sustainability, and supply chain have studied every component and all aspects of the process, and redesigned materials, manufacturing techniques, and even packaging to minimize the footprint.

The design of the shoe itself revolves around the overall concept of "reductive art"-to provide runners with what they need, nothing more. One of the core parts is to consider mode efficiency when creating the material rolls used to cut the various parts of the shoe.

The design team drew inspiration from the so-called tangram principle and treated the material pieces as tangram puzzles-combining them perfectly to minimize waste and thereby reduce carbon emissions. This concept is applicable to shoe uppers and outsoles for maximum impact.

FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is also one of the lightest performance shoes ever made by Adidas and Allbirds-further saving material usage, using only what you need, while maintaining the performance integrity of the shoe, such as a hollow bottom structure instead of twisting bars.

These learnings laid the foundation for the next development. We explore low-carbon design and creation in a wider range of products. Allbirds applies project insights and its dedication to engineered natural materials to its performance and lifestyle product portfolio. It also paves the way for new collaborative methods in an industry that is usually easy to keep secret, allowing other brands to find new solutions together.

"FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is an important reminder that we can achieve greater achievements together than we can alone, especially in the race to combat climate change. It is incredible that from a simple but far-fetched world’s lowest carbon The idea of trail running shoes has become a product that consumers can obtain in just two years-which proves the power of cooperation. A formidable challenge.

We at Allbirds are on our own journey to reduce the carbon emissions of each product by 95% by 2030, and the two teams' unremitting attention to FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is exactly what we need to achieve this ambitious goal. But far beyond its impact on any of our brands, we hope that this product can inspire others in the industry to rethink the “always” way of doing things, and the specific knowledge learned from our development process can release carbon for their teams Saving, too. Tim Brown, co-founder and co-CEO of Allbirds.

The proprietary technologies of Adidas and Allbirds complement each other. Based on Adidas' popular LIGHTSTRIKE midsole and tested in accordance with the same performance standards, the FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT midsole composite is redesigned with Allbirds bio-based sugarcane, providing low-carbon components made of natural materials.

As a representative of another mixed material, the newly developed upper material is made of 77% recycled polyester and 23% natural Tencel (a material made of wood pulp) to create a smooth and lightweight upper ,Meet performance expectations while reducing carbon emissions. Finally, the outsole is made of 10% recycled rubber.

The shoes will be sold in limited quantities and can be purchased from December 15th on adidas.com, adidas and Allbirds apps and some adidas and Allbirds stores* (recommended retail price of 120 euros or equivalent in local currency). A wider version will follow in the spring of 2022, which will include four new color schemes.
