Justin Thomas caused a stir in the first round of the Open Championship on Thursday, even though the former Alabama All-American carded an even-par 72 on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

What got the golf world’s attention was Thomas’ outfit, which included jogger pants that left his ankles exposed.

The PGA Tour asked on Twitter, “Sports fans, what do we think?” about Thomas’ attire, and the collective answer seemed to be “not much,” with one commentator going so far as to say, “Can’t imagine there’s been a worse outfit in 150 years of #TheOpen.”

Greyson Clothiers is Thomas’ apparel sponsor. He joined the company as an “ambassador” in March. Greyson Clothiers describes its line for Thomas as “classic with a modern twist.”

On Thursday, Thomas was at 2 under after birdies at the par-five fifth and par-four ninth right up until the Old Course’s famous Road Hole. Thomas carded a double-bogey 6 at No. 17, then parred the 18th to complete his first round.

Thomas will resume his pursuit of a third major golf championship at 9:10 a.m. CDT Friday. That will be 3:10 p.m. at the golf course.
